Do you run a business or service that requires appointment scheduling? If so, then you’re already fully aware of what’s involved. A lot of time is wasted between email and phone call scheduling not to mention the appointment reminders. Evergreen is appointment scheduling software developed to save time and automate the tasks involved with scheduling.

Easy Scheduling

For most, a website is an integral part of their business and in some ways an extension for their products and services. With Evergreen companies can incorporate appointment scheduling directly into their website. Customers can schedule online from anywhere and save both parties time.

The scheduling information can display employee schedules and availability as well as block time out so that scheduling isn’t an option. Through traditional operating hours and manipulation of schedules, companies can guide customers towards openings and encourage them to schedule immediately while they’re on the website.

Evergreen Benefits

Obviously time is a huge benefit to using Evergreen. Initially, users will need to setup the Evergreen system with basic company information and afterwards scheduling is, for the most part, automated.

Convenience is another big advantage to using Evergreen with your business. Customers want easy, immediate, accurate service. It doesn’t get much more convenient than scheduling an appointment online at a time of your own choosing. Customers will likely embrace the online scheduling option and be more inclined to make an appointment with the option in front of them.

A huge time waster is reminding customers of an upcoming appointment. Evergreen handles that with automated reminders via email along with appointment notifications via text message and email to staff.

Features

We’ve touched on a few features already, such as the automated reminders and integration with existing website. Other features worth noting include SSL encryption to keep data safe, widgets and buttons for call to action purposes, customer database and profiles along with a host of other features that expand on the service.

Summary

Evergreen could be a truly beneficial service and application for those who set appointments regularly. Some freelancers may have trouble relying on Evergreen since appointments are more fluid by nature than say, a massage parlor for example.

Evergreen is versatile and developed to provide as wide an availability as possible with additional integration directly from Facebook pages via a widget. Solo users can start using Evergreen right away for $24/month while larger organizations have additional account options.

The Evergreen software service is a utility that many small businesses can benefit from and should be using to save manpower and labor costs as well as draw in potential clients who prefer using the web to schedule and make appointments.

IT professionals need access to their client’s machines at a moments notice. There are several ways to accomplish the task including several free options. Windows itself has a built-in Remote Desktop feature which ensures connections with a remote server are seamless and easy. If you’re looking for a comparable option in Linux, then Remmina Remote Desktop is what you’re after.

How To Setup Remmina

For this tutorial we’re referencing instructions targeted to Ubuntu users. The same setup process applies, but installation will differ slightly for your Linux flavor.

Installation

Open Ubuntu Software Center.

Search for Remmina (there should be only one choice).

Click install.

Setup

Open Remmina (terminal command: remmina).

From the toolbar, click Create a new remote desktop file.

A Remote Desktop Preference window opens.

Enter a Name for the connection. It can be anything, this is just for description purposes.

Choose a Protocol from the drop-down menu. We’re setting up a Windows Server connection so we’ll choose RDP – Windows Terminal Service.

In the Server field, input the IP address of the server you want to connect to.

In the Username field, input the username for the remote system (ex. Administrator).

In the Password field, input the password for the remote system.

The remaining settings are subjective to your situation, but generally on a new setup the default values are acceptable. Tip: To improve speed, reduce the resolution and color depth.

When you’re finished, click Connect or Save.

That process should get you up and running. Remmina offers more advanced settings as well. To improve speed, users can set the quality level to fastest under Preferences → RDP or manipulate the toolbar under Preferences → Options, along with a number of other more advanced settings.

Remmina is straight-forward and does exactly what it intends to do. The interface is direct, not flashy but adequate. There are a number of remote access titles available, but what makes Remmina convenient is that it uses the Windows built-in Remote Desktop on the host end. Thereby eliminating the need to install a third party software title on the receiving end.

You can download Remmina or search for the package in your distribution, as we described above for Ubuntu.

Standard web practices are changing. Websites are more regularly and forcefully tracking everything we do and everywhere we go online. While some people are okay with being tracked, many are not and there are certainly times when users just want to surf as though the web knows nothing about them.

For that reason, Google’s Chrome browser offers an incognito feature which prevents the browser from storing information about the websites you visit. It’s a way to surf naturally and make your own opinions and decisions rather than being force fed ads or services matched to your browsing habits.

While Incognito Mode is handy, it can be much more useful when manipulated to function automatically whenever users visit certain websites. Ghost Incognito is a Chrome extension designed to do just that. It instantly switches the browser to incognito mode when a site on the list is visited.

How To Automatically Open Websites In Incognito Mode

Download and install Ghost Incognito.

After installation you’ll notice a small ghost icon in the extensions toolbar area.

Browse the web as you normally would. When you navigate to a website you’d like to prevent Chrome from tracking, simply click the ghost icon. That’s it!

Remove Websites From Ghost Incognito

To remove websites from the Ghost Incognito list, click the wrench icon and navigate to Tools → Extensions → click Options under Ghost Incognito → Click Remove all (#) domains.

To remove specific websites, allow Ghost Incognito to run in incognito mode. Navigate to Tools → Extensions → check the box labeled Allow in incognito under Ghost Incognito.

Ahh notes. It doesn’t seem to matter how organized we get or how much we document information, we always need to take notes. Whether they’re on sticky notes, tablets, chicken-scratch on our hands or whatnot, note taking is something everyone does. Fetchnotes is note-taking from your computer, mobile device and the web.

Note-taking apps are plentiful in the app markets. There is a real need for just the right combination of simplicity and organization. Some have extended features and are truly robust, while others focus on the idea of simple mobile note-taking. Fetchnotes is a cross between the two.

Fetchnotes is accessible from anywhere which means taking and syncing notes is wildly convenient. With the use of login credentials, Fetchnotes is able to keep your notes up to date so that they’re easily retrieved even if operating on a different platform. Fetchnotes keeps things simple by not predefining categories, rather instead utilizing hashtags (#) as a way of tagging notes for search and retrieval.

The web interface is clean and easy to operate. The mobile interface is a little different than the norm, but we didn’t have difficulty adjusting. Fetchnotes is still progressing so we expect an expansion in features that could create some competition for the more robust note-taking apps. That’s a long way off from now, but as it stands Fetchnotes is a great note-taking alternative that syncs across devices and organizes notes your way according to hashtags.

So you’ve adopted an online solution for storing your precious data. The cloud service you’ve chosen seems to have everything you want, transmission encryption, huge storage space, inexpensive pricing plans and mobile access. The one thing missing is a layer of protection for the data once it’s on your cloud’s servers.

The simple fact is not all online backup and storage services are created equal. Some work with all operating systems but have limited space or some have sync capability but don’t support Linux. The either or features comparison can be frustrating when trying to find a company that’s reputable, stable and trustworthy enough to hold your sensitive data. If the only thing holding you back is endpoint server encryption, then the most straight forward solution is to encrypt it yourself.

You may be thinking, “Encryption? That’s too technical for me!” It may sound like a word out of the movies, but encryption is more commonplace than you might think. Geeks and tech enthusiasts have been using it for many years for their own personal files and it’s a good idea for other, non-technical, users to start too. Everything is moving to the cloud and users will need to protect their data themselves instead of relying on a third party to do it for them. Who else will care about your data the way you do?

That’s where encryption tools come in. The one we’re looking at and highly recommending is Truecrypt. Truecrypt is free open-source disk encryption software, meaning it’s free to download and use as you like. Without getting too technical, Truecrypt uses several algorithms, including the popular AES to encrypt data. Algorithms can be used in conjunction with each other to add two and three layers to the protection and all perform at 256-bit key size.

Technical details aside, if you aren’t a geek, then you’ll likely want to know how easy it is to use and what the extended benefits are. Starting with the latter, benefits include encryption of portable storage devices such as flash drives and external hard drives, entire partition encryption, individual file or folder encryption and hidden partitions. Ease of use depends on how comfortable you are with software, but the process itself is straight forward.

In the screenshots (taken on a linux system) below, notice the simple interface. There’s no wrong way to encrypt your data when it comes to choosing an algorithm and the same premise applies as with any other password protected item – use a strong password. Truecrypt does the rest. The documentation on using Truecrypt is extremely thorough so instead of rehashing the information, it’s best to reference the material directly if you have questions.

After you’ve encrypted all your data, simply instruct your online backup / storage service to sync the Truecrypt container or upload it manually to the cloud. Now, even if a hooded figure with the powers of a Ninja and hacker skills of a supercomputer gain access to your cloud service, your data will still be encrypted and protected.

Finally, Truecrypt is free software and the product is kept up to date and patched because users continue to support them through donations. If you do use and like Truecrypt we encourage you to donate to the cause.

The Chrome add-on instantly zooms in on Pins when the mouse pointer is hovered over a pin. Pinterest Zoom functions much the same way Google Images auto-zoom feature works and makes viewing pins a bit more enjoyable.

The extension is lightweight and as the author puts it, “Pinterest Photo Zoom does one thing and one thing better than the rest: Enhance your Pinterest photo viewing experience.” It’s true Pinterest Zoom is a one trick pony and only works on Pinterest, but that’s a good thing. It’s nice to have an extension that does its job and isn’t overloaded with extra features that users don’t need or already have.

You won’t find a lot of fancy configurations either, Pinterest Zoom has a tiny icon which sits inside the address bar and is only visible when on the Pinterest site. You can download Pinterest Zoom from the Chrome Web Store.

Dreaming of a paperless office where all those loose receipts, bills and documents simply disappear into a digitally organized filing cabinet? Dream no longer, Neat is here to ‘Tame Your Paper Monster‘.

Neat combines software and scanning to transform cluttered paper piles into searchable, manageable digital records. The Neat solutions range from portable scanners to desktop scanners all working in conjunction with Neat software.

Neat deciphers scanned documents and determines which category the document best fits in. Whether it be receipt, business card or something else, Neat identifies the document and sorts them in the document database. Afterwards, users have clean, organized files without the huge paper mess. Neat creates searchable PDFs which makes finding specific information as easy as possible.

Of course all the information is portable, whether it be a download to a local machine or direct import to popular applications. Neat is completely focused on organizing consumer-s paper information and as a wonderful side effect is reducing the need to store paper documents as well as reproduce them. The Neat Company has perhaps one of the best early footholds for completely eliminating paper in a home environment. If you have been wondering how to get out from all that paper clutter, then Neat is worth checking out.

Pinterest is pretty simple in its own right when it comes to functionality. Pinning is something many users are becoming accustomed to as natural everyday social interaction. That’s why tools or browser add-ons which make pinning quicker or easier are in such high demand.

Easypinner for Pinterest is a Firefox extension that makes pinning quicker. Easypinner scans each webpage you visit for pinnable images. If an image can be pinned, Easypinner adds a small Pinterest icon to the image which users can see by hovering the mouse pointer over an image.

The process is simple:

Navigate to any webpage.

Hover your mouse pointer over an image.

If the Pinterest icon appears, click it.

Click the Pin It button to assign your pin to one of your Pinboards.

A nice little feature of Easypinner is that it displays the number of times an image has been pinned. When a user clicks the Pinterest icon on an image, a Pin It button is displayed with pin count. Easypinner is easy to use and makes selecting specific images from a webpage full of them much more precise when pinning.

The extension adds a Pinterest Pin It button which, when clicked, grants instant access for sending images to your Pinboards. Fans of minimalistic look and feel in their browser might prefer this extension over the official Pinterest bookmarklet since it’s usable from the toolbar, which gives users the freedom to keep the bookmarks bar hidden.

An added benefit of this shareaholic extension is that it shows the current Pin count for each page. If you like to monitor your own content for number of Pins, then this extension is a great tool. For everyone else, it’s a good way to see if the item you’re pinning has been pinned in the past and just how popular it has been.

If you’re like us, then your Firefox has a number of App Tabs. The phrase “Pin as App Tab” is commonplace among Firefox users these days as the use of App Tabs make navigating to favorite websites much easier. Simply Pinned enhances the focus of those tabs by eliminating extraneous toolbars.

For those unfamiliar with App Tabs, they are favorite websites pinned to the tab bar in a minimalistic fashion so that their screen footprint is small, but always load when Firefox is opened. In a nutshell, they are your favorite websites permanently open in Firefox. Another feature associated with Firefox, like all browsers, are toolbars. Some serve a specific purpose while others are used as browsing companions. While many are useful, they aren’t always needed for every website.

Pinned Tabs with Toolbars Visible

Pinned Tabs are often favorite or frequently visited websites and as such their focus is very specific. An example would be Facebook. Many users likely have Facebook pinned and prefer a clean interface while navigating around the social website. For the most part, Facebook users won’t need toolbars like Web Developer or StumbleUpon, etc., but they still want that functionality on other tabs. That’s where Simply Pinned comes in.

Pinned Tabs with Toolbars Hidden

Simply Pinned hides toolbars and sidebars from Pinned Tabs to provide more screen real estate for those favorite websites. Simply Pinned is a simple install that automatically recognizes which tabs are pinned and hides all extraneous information inside the tab to deliver a clean minimalistic website view. Simply Pinned hides the address bar, menu bar, bookmarks bar, add-on toolbars, sidebars and any other in browser distractions so that users can focus solely on the pinned website.

Users can toggle the toolbars on and off, so although the toolbars are hidden by default, they can be shown with the click of a button. Simply Pinned uses an icon or key combination which can be used to toggle the view on and off. There are several options available for choosing which toolbars are to be hidden, but for the most part Simply Pinned is a small extension that does what’s intended without a lot of fanfair.
