E3 is a time for gamers and gaming geeks to enjoy the spotlight, a time of renewed hope and a time of anticipation. E3 2013 was no different. Gamers were provided a cornucopia of information surrounding the next generation of consoles, new IPs and sequels to fan favorite franchises.

Among the biggest news at E3 inevitably surrounds the console makers. Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony all have their own time to showcase offerings and unique content to wow fans and intrigue gamers. This year much of the surprise was already delivered via pre-E3 events both by Microsoft and Sony which unveiled new consoles from both companies.

Why Sony Looks Like A Winner

Up until E3, both consoles appeared very similar in terms of hardware and for the most part what we’d expect from this round of next generation systems. Microsoft took a great deal of heat over some of their decisions while Sony had a huge question mark hanging over its head with no console images or diagrams.

Console & Controller

For Sony, all that changed when they took the stage at E3 2013. Sony teased viewers for the first third of their presentation with, for the most part, lackluster details and information. However, the reveal of the PS4 couldn’t have gone better. Its sleek style with slanted front and back edges make the two-tone black console a definitive and unimposing piece of hardware. In addition, the slightly larger PS4 controller is sturdy and includes a touch panel for increased control and options.

Vita

Sony continues to support and push out new games to the Vita. The handheld Playstation option has slowly but surely won over the hearts and minds of many gamers. The long list of games coming to Vita include Killzone, Counterspy, The Walking Dead 400 and more. Sony hit all the right buttons (pun intended) to keep Vita in the mobile gaming discussion.

Games

While Sony’s PS4 isn’t a clear winner in the games department, they did provide them in equal amount and quality to that of Xbox One. Titles such as Destiny, Tom Clancy’s The Division, The Order: 1886 and others lead a long list of over 140 games in development for the PS4 right now.

PS3

As with the Xbox 360, the PS3 will continue to receive many games. Although much of the focus, in the media, will be on the PS4 there are a great deal of high quality games making their way to the PS3 including The Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, Batman Arkham Origins and others.

Pricing & Restrictions

The main reasons for Microsoft taking a beating from fans leading up to E3 was the restrictions they plan to put on gamers with regards to used games, internet access and kinect integration. After their E3 presser, there was even more heat sent their way with the added shock of a $499 price tag on the Xbox One.

Sony whether by design or just plain good fortune absolutely clobbered Microsoft by imposing zero restrictions on used games and connectivity. Gamers won’t need to be constantly connected to the internet, check in regularly or have a camera always on monitoring their moves. It was just the sort of news gamers wanted to hear and needed to be told.

As if that news wasn’t enough to ingratiate Sony to gamers, they unveiled the price of the PS4 to the tone of $399 – a whopping $100 less than Microsoft’s Xbox One. Without a doubt after those declaration were made, Sony was well on their way to enjoying a pleasant week at E3.

Entertainment

Where Microsoft focused too much on entertainment and TV during their pre-E3 event and soured many fans, Sony discussed the PS4’s entertainment offerings during the E3 presser. While much more subdued than the gaming portion, Sony showed they are willing to provide options like Netflix, Flixster, Hulu+ and others via the PS4 console.

Original programming is in the works from Sony of the PS4 with Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited read on day one. The brilliance is that Sony will provide much of the same entertainment offerings through the PS4 that the Xbox One will provide, but Sony chose to downplay that aspect which was marketing genius.

Summary & Highlights

Though we would have liked to have seen more original IPs come out of the Sony presser, it’s almost impossible to say anyone other than Sony won this year’s popular vote. The slick console, attractive price point, restriction free gaming, improved entertainment and overall willingness to give gamers what they want undeniably put Sony on a pedestal for the others to reach.

This week Microsoft unveiled the next generation of Xbox console, simply named One. Throughout the presentation, One was referred to as an all-in-one platform for gaming and entertainment with everything a user could want in the way of gesture control and voice recognition. No doubt, the One promises a lot and we have no doubt it will deliver, but is it truly what we as users want?

Gaming

Let’s start with the core of Xbox origins, gaming. Though we saw little, the previews shown were exquisite. Graphics have never appeared more realistic and game engines look primed to take advantage of the new Xbox One hardware. Expect more from E3 in June along with actual gameplay footage.

Used Games

This seems to be a sore spot as it appears patrons of Gamefly and others will be left wondering for a bit longer if Microsoft has a defined plan for rental discs. As for purchase/trade-in of used games, Microsoft seems to be trying to reinvent the wheel with some sort of licensing program via retail outlets and online. More details on this are expected, possibly at E3 and surely before launch.

Backwards Compatibility

None. Xbox One will not be able to play Xbox 360 or earlier titles. Not surprising, but somewhat disappointing. Titles like Skyrim and other blockbusters will simply be left to collect dust once adoption of One begins.

Profiles

Gamerscores will transfer, again no surprise considering they’re tied to an email account. Digital games however are a no go, which means money spent on digital titles is tied to 360.

Entertainment

If you’re looking for a new cable box, then Xbox One is something to consider. We’ve been fearful that Microsoft’s move to be more entertainment-friendly in the living room would cause a serious downside in gaming. This may have just occurred in the Xbox One. Granted, it’s still early and we have E3 yet to come, but the Xbox One reveal presentation focused on entertainment – no one can deny that.

From fantasy sports with NFL games to live TV viewing, entertainment was front stage at the reveal. Here’s the problem with Microsoft’s path to entertainment, they aren’t providing very much for what they’re asking. Let’s break down the costs:

[list style=”square” color=”cobult”]

Microsoft is likely to ask somewhere in the neighborhood of $400-$500 if not more for the Xbox One

Use of Entertainment Apps require you to purchase an Xbox Live Gold membership at no less than $5/month to access apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus and others.

Many of those same apps additionally cost just shy of $10 monthly.

If you want to watch live TV, Microsoft insists that you have a cable subscription in order to watch it, which as we all know can be hundreds of dollars per month depending on your service level.

To compensate for those endless and partially unnecessary (Xbox Live Gold) charges, users get Kinect. More gestures and voice recognition, in a nutshell. Voice recognition is spiffy, no doubt about it and gestures are fun for about the first 5 minutes. After that, the shine loses its luster and we’re left with constant nickel and dime charges. For the last time – users aren’t looking for another way to access cable, we’re looking to replace it.

Otherwise, Xbox One is the end all be all of entertainment devices thus far.

Operations Q&A

Internet Connectivity

Is it required? Yes. That isn’t to say you can’t be offline for a period of time, but the system must have access once every 24 hours to stay updated. We speculate that this requirement is to authenticate your cloud account and game ownership with your console. Unfortunately, those without a constant internet connection won’t be enjoying anything on Xbox One.

Borrowed Games

Can you have a friend over to play HIS copy of a game? Strictly speaking – No. Playing the game isn’t an issue, but you’ll need to be signed in under your friend’s account. That means, no more leaving the game at a friend’s house to let them try it out for a couple days.

Game Installation

Is it required? Yes. All games must be installed in order to play them. This is a somewhat odd approach by Microsoft though necessary considering the use of blu-ray. Trouble is likely to occur when space becomes limited. Each unit will ship with 500GB of storage, but honestly that’s about half of what should be standard. 1TB isn’t exactly expensive anymore. We’d like Microsoft to rethink this particular hardware option and up the storage space to avoid space conflicts.

Kinect Required?

Yes. Kinect is now an intregal part of the Xbox landscape and it isn’t going away. Kinect itself is fantastic and a marvelous addition to an entertainment box. Whether the Kinect can add rather than detract enjoyment from the gaming side of Xbox One is to be determined.

Final Thoughts

The Xbox One event looked like an E3 presentation, but in reality was a prelude to the big event which starts on June 11, 2013 (Microsoft’s presser scheduled for 6/10/2013). The live Redmond event stood out because of what it lacked, not what it delivered. Lacking were gaming details, games themselves and an overall commitment to loyal Xbox gamers. The very thing each and every console needs in order to survive is its gamer base and Microsoft nearly ignored them.

The Xbox One looks like a state of the art entertainment console, though when you break it down is slightly more than a glorified cable box. The Kinect, TV integration, add-on apps, internet browsing and music player are directly targeted to those who think the Xbox is merely a gaming device. Sounds great in theory except that those same people likely won’t bother to even look at the Xbox One as more than a gaming device. A catch-22 that Microsoft will be hard pressed to get by.

Is it worth the cost? Unknown until we actually see the price point on the One. However, with all the extra fees involved in order to take advantage of all the bells and whistles, it seems highly unlikely (at least at launch).

Final judgment is being withheld until we see what Microsoft delivers at E3 2013. Here’s a tip for the Xbox One team – Bring the games!

Expect a follow-up from us following E3 and in the coming months leading up to the Xbox One release.

Amara, a crowd-subtitling platform which allows users to translate videos, has launched a free app which allows any personal YouTube channel to invite users to translate and subtitle their videos.

We profiled Amara last June in our Nifty Websites Collection. The need for translation of videos on the web continues to accelerate as global sharing increases. Amara fits that need and then some.

How It Works

Using Amara is incredibly simple and now with YouTube availability on all personal channels, creators can enlist the aid of their viewers to translate the videos and spread their knowledge, message or all out hilarity to the world.

Channel owners/creators simply need to visit Amara.org and connect their channel. Moving forward, all videos on that channel will include a link for viewers to offer up translation for videos. Here’s a direct link to the connection page.

[blockquote align=”center” style=”style1″]The only way to get a video translated into the world’s languages is to invite the world’s viewers to help. No YouTube creator speaks every language and automated transcription and translation is still not high enough quality to understand the content of a video. But viewers watching from around the world are excited to help others watch,” said Nicholas Reville, Executive Director of Amara[/blockquote]

About Amara

[blockquote align=”center” style=”style4″]With customers such as, Netflix, Twitter, PBS, TED Talks, Udacity, and Coursera, Amara gives individuals, communities, and larger organizations the power to overcome accessibility and language barriers for online video. Amara’s revolutionary crowdsourcing approach offers a robust API that allows companies to use the platform for internal collaboration as well as allowing individual customers to translate video content. Backed by a million dollars in funding from the Knight Foundation and Mozilla, Amara has received awards from the Federal Communications Commission, the United Nations and TechAwards. For more information, visit Amara.org and follow @AmaraSubs on Twitter.[/blockquote]

If you happen to use your smartphone or tablet for more than just games, then you likely have at least one news reader. News readers are extremely plentiful now with focus on everyday news, niche topics, social stories and other varieties all designed to deliver content to you from blogs and news sites around the web.

Today we’re reviewing News360 (Tablet version). News360 is similar in many ways to other readers you may be using or have used in the past. News and stories are pulled from a wide variety of sources and articles can be segregated by topic and saved for later reading. Unlike others however, News360 doesn’t require a lot of source adding and topic subscribing. News360 learns your reading habits and tailors articles to fit your preferences.

The differences between News360 and others begins with it’s responsiveness. Though the app pulls a great deal of information in from outside sources, including images, it responds very quickly. Stories and images load within seconds of opening and smooth sideswipe scrolling keeps the app moving quickly from page to page. Along with speed comes reliability. In the past we’ve recommended several readers, including Pulse and Google Currents. Unlike those readers, News360 doesn’t suffer from the same performance degradation associated with large apps, such as news readers.

Features

Beyond the breadth of information that News360 delivers, there are a number of excellent features to keep you going back to this app over others.

Topics

Sure, there are lots of topics and yes you can choose your own of which to follow. However with News360, choosing topics is exceptionally painless, guiding you through the initial setup phase to ensure your topics of interest are setup immediately. Topics/categories are aligned across the top of the app where they can be rearranged, added, removed and expanded with ease.

Article Delivery

Over time, News360 learns what you enjoy reading and delivers current stories to you based on your habits. The behavioral customization is mostly accurate though can still seem out of sorts at times. News360 uses accomplishments to alert users of how well they are assisting the app in customizing the delivered content. Accomplishments may sound like a bit of work, but really it’s just about reading. The more you read, the closer you get to achieving ideal content delivery.

Evernote Integration

Have an Evernote account? A lot of people do. Through app integration, News360 can save articles to an Evernote account for later reading, reference or whatever the reason. Evernote is one of the most widely used apps on the market. The integration allows for easy sharing and saving, ensures stories are more readily available for reference and keeps News360 tidy.

Interface

All the top end news reader apps have a visual appealing interface with large bold images and easy to read text with direct links to articles. News360 is no different, but the added benefit of flip boxes means less ‘tap and back’ as users can spin the news box to see a more detailed blip from articles before opening the full story.

News360 also acts as a full fledged browser. Articles can be opened on the originating website directly from within the app which again means less back and forth between apps. Webpages load remarkably quick with a preview box showing what users can expect. While not entirely necessary, the preview box is a feature we find to be highly positive in adding transparency to link destination.

Conclusion

Another news reader may not be at the top of your list or even light a spark of excitement in your eyes, but News360 will definitely bring you a sense of contentment when you realize it’s the only news source you need.

News360 learns reading habits and returns the most relevant stories while still delivering other top articles and niche topics that may broaden your reading horizons.

If you haven’t tried News360 yet, give it a try and share with us your experiences and thoughts.

A lot can happen in a week, a day, even an hour in the tech world. This past week had a number of significant events and news that we’ve collected into a single tidy post.

Amazon’s MP3 Shot at Apple

Amazon launched a mobile web version of its MP3 store. On the surface that may not seem significant, but as a mobile version based in HTML5 code, Amazon is able to offer another source for cheap tunes to iOS users.

Apple has historically made sure that iTunes is the de-facto way for iOS users to obtain content. To that end, many iOS users don’t bother to take advantage of other means of acquiring digital media as the walls of Apple surround them.

Now, Amazon is delivering the easiest of sources via a simple website address that any user can access. Hit up Amazon’s MP3 Store to check out the music offerings.

MediaFire Delivers 50GB to Android

In case you’ve been living under a rock, cloud storage services are everywhere right now. Between extremely popular services like Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud and SkyDrive, users are covered from every angle. The only downside being that space can be an issue.

MediaFire this week announced that they’ve finally released an Android version of their app. While iOS users have been enjoying MediaFire’s free 50GB accounts for some time now, Android users finally get a taste of that huge chunk of cloud storage.

MediaFire is still a minor player in the cloud storage market, but with 50GB of free cloud storage they’re making a rather large footprint.

Facebook Adds Voice Calling for iOS

Take that Google Voice! Perhaps not. A new Facebook feature is aimed at giving mobile users free voice calls over Wi-Fi or cellular networks. While it is a promising development, there are limitations and it is by no means a serious challenge to Google Voice or other VoIP services.

Currently, the feature is only available to iOS users (by tapping the “i” button), can only call those with the Facebook Messenger app installed and cannot handle landline calls (which Google Voice can).

Still, it is early in the feature’s life cycle so anything is possible down the road.

Other Stories of Note

LinkedIn shuts down LinkedIn Answers

It’s being reported by Mashable that LinkedIn Answers will be expired to make way for other avenues of engagement between its members. End date appears to be 1/31/13. Reasoning behind the move points to limited interaction from users.

The news isn’t exactly earth shattering, but the Answers section was a good place to browse for information. Perhaps all the browsing wasn’t interactive enough to keep Answers alive.

MySpace Re-launch Sort of

MySpace has extended its arm from the grave with a new look. The cleaner more modern look appeals to the music side of users. Connecting through music is very much what MySpace is all about now. The idea is solid and if MySpace was named something other than MySpace, it would probably do well. As it stands, we’ll have to wait and see if MySpace can extend more than an arm from the grave.

Private Dell – A Sign of the Times

Although not set in concrete just yet, it appears Dell is moving towards a buyout on their way to becoming a private company. The computer industry as a whole has struggled amid the onslaught of tablets and smartphones. Dell in particular has taken huge hits with PC sales in a slump and a less than enthusiastic response from the tech world about Windows 8.

Going private may refocus Dell and empower them to think beyond traditional PCs, a gamble that must be taken to revitalize the company moving forward. If everything goes smoothly, expect news of Dell going private sometime in late January.

That’s right, more changes to Facebook’s privacy policies and controls are headed your way.

That’s right, more changes to Facebook’s privacy policies and controls are headed your way. The changes will go into effect on a rolling basis over the course of several weeks and these are mandatory changes with no opt out choice.

Many of the changes are designed to simplify the control process for users with more direct labeling of privacy settings and additional control over what apps can see and do. However, with all the positive that may come from these changes, Facebook can’t mask that they have stripped away possibly the one feature that is most important for privacy.

Here’s a rundown of the changes and briefly what they mean for your privacy.

Facebook Privacy Changes

Request and Removal Tool for Photos

In a nutshell, users will have the ability to mass request other users remove photos of them or untag themselves from photos.

Of course untagged photos don’t remove photos from other areas of Facebook, just removes them from your own timeline.

Privacy Quick Links

A new Privacy Shortcuts button will be added to all Facebook pages in the upper right hand corner with the Home button.

The Privacy Shortcuts button will list 3 primary links to more directly view who has access to your data and who can contact you. A fourth option is available to “See All Settings”, but one can only wonder what “all” means this time around.

Activity Log Improvement

Facebook has implemented a way to view your entire history in one fell swoop through the Activity Log. Users can view their most recent post as well as posts from years ago from the Activity Log screen.

This feature is already in place and can be seen by appending “allactivity” to the end of your Facebook page URL. [info]Example: https://www.facebook.com/YOURUSERNAMEHERE/allactivity.[/info]

The improvements come by way of filtering whether it be by year, month, post type or app interaction so users can quickly see those items which appeared in their timeline.

App Permissions

For a long time it’s been, when an app is in, it’s in. Now users will have another option to prevent blanket allowing of permissions to apps.

Users will still need to allow an app access to their profile in order to utilize its benefits, but only basic approval with an option for advanced permission. [info]Example: You want to use an app so you allow the app access to your profile. Done. Now the app wants permission to post to your friends. You can allow or skip that permission.[/info]

This change doesn’t really mean a whole lot since apps could essentially ignore the process unless Facebook starts demanding they adhere to their new permission policy.

Search Inclusion

Finally, the most significant change isn’t a positive one. Facebook has decided that users cannot opt out of having their name included in search.

That means, users cannot keep their profile hidden from the search feature. [warning]Think of Facebook as a worldwide phonebook, but you can’t be unlisted.[/warning]

The opt out of search feature is one of the most important of all privacy settings and frankly the foundation for privacy on Facebook. We’ll let you draw your own conclusions about this change, but we find this to be unacceptable.

Box, one of the leading cloud storage and content management services has agreed to extend its partnership with Sony through 2013.

The partnership gives owners of most Xperia smartphones with Android version 2.1 or higher access to 50gb of cloud storage space for free. The partnership which began in late 2011 means Box keeps a portion of their market reach intact with a major electronics company. Sony benefits from the press the Xperia will receive regarding this partnership.

[blockquote align=”center” style=”style1″ cite=”SonyMobile blog”]Xperia smartphone* and Sony tablet users can now grab free 50GB cloud storage for life, by signing-up or accessing existing Box accounts from their devices before 31st December 2013.[/blockquote]

To receive your free 50gb from Box, simply access or sign-up for a new Box account from your device.

Ubisoft Hunts Sneaky AS3 Bug

Ubisoft is in clean up mode ..for bugs that is. It has recently come to light that some players are experiencing save game loss on Assassin’s Creed 3. The bug can dramatically impact saved games to the point where they revert to a completion percentage far less than what has actually been attained or worse yet reset progress altogether.

The bug seems to have originated from the latest DLC, Hidden Secrets. Apparently the bug occurs when players download the DLC while playing the game. Advice for now is to avoid downloading the DLC or at very least don’t play or load saved games while the download is occurring.

Ubisoft is quickly moving to correct the error. The bug only affects current season pass holders. The DLC is set to release for non-season pass holders this week.

John McAfee Finally Caught

McAfee has been on the run ever since a murder in his home neighborhood in Belize. Belize police have been searching for him without success until his recent capture by Guatemalan authorities. McAfee is wanted for questioning, but feels the Belize police have other nefarious reasons for their interest in him.

For those wondering or unaware, yes John McAfee is the founder and name behind the McAfee anti-virus software so widely known around the world.

Facebook Strikes Again!

It seems every few months or so there is a new sequel in the long running series of Facebook privacy fiascoes. This time around Facebook is targeting anyone in a current or past relationship.

Couples Pages

The new, loosely labeled, feature is a new page created for anyone tagged in a relationship on Facebook. It combines users profiles to portray a single unified couples page. In a nutshell it means John Doe and Jane Doe now have a JohnDoeandJaneDoe page along with their own personal Facebook pages.

The new couples page displays numerous details about those in the relationship. As an example, couples pages might include anniversary date, photos they’re both tagged in, mutual friends, mutual likes and all posts involving each other.

As of now, there is no way to delete the pages or control the content displayed on couples pages.

Privacy Concerns

As usual, this new ‘feature‘ raises a lot of privacy concerns for users. First and foremost, there is absolutely no way to control couples pages. Neither partner in the relationship has ownership (which if they did would raise another problem) and there are no controls in personal account settings to manage couples pages and information.

Now to be fair, married couples in a long stable relationship may not have a problem with this feature. We can also see the benefit in having a couples page for newly engaged users who want to have a unified page to share the news with the world. However, in most cases we’re talking about young adults or even teenagers who flip the relationship tag off and on like a light switch. That kind sharing isn’t what anyone wants.

Additionally, anyone can view relationship information by navigating to a couples page. If you’re familiar with friendship pages, then you won’t be surprised by the setup and information available on couples pages.

What Can You Do

In short, not a whole lot. As we mentioned, control settings don’t exist and there is no way to opt out of couples pages. However, there are a few long, uncomfortable things you can do to limit the information on those pages.

[list type=bullet]

Eliminate Mutual Friendship Listing: Nothing short of un-friending common friends will fix this.

Eliminate Posts: Don’t post on each other’s walls or about each other to keep posts to a minimum on your couples page. Delete old posts if you want to remove existing information.

Eliminate Common Likes: Don’t both like the same things.

Eliminate Relationship Status and Location: You’ll have to hide those bits of information from everyone in your privacy settings. That will keep the ‘complicated’ and other statuses as well as where you live hidden from viewers.

Aside from those rather drastic steps, you can complain to Facebook and ask them to get rid of couples pages. Although, we have zero belief that Facebook will remove them no matter how much outrage there is.

Something To Consider

Facebook is still the giant among giants in terms of social gathering and interaction. There’s no denying that Facebook still brings us together like never before and even with the backhanded slaps to privacy, people continue to use it because there is no other source quite like it.

For those who are serious about moving on from Facebook there is an option. Create your own page where you, your friends and family can stay in contact. There are so many website creation services available now, that anyone can get started quickly. Many are free and offer plenty of detail for making a space of your own.

If games are your primary Facebook activity, then that option may be difficult to swallow but games come and go and you may find the idea of your own personal space – managed by you – a worthwhile project.
