Post Flash Environment

Flash won’t disappear immediately and although halting mobile flash development means the end for an Adobe product, it doesn’t mean it goes away entirely. There’s no question development is on the mobile platform right now and for the foreseeable future. However, desktop flash is likely to last much longer. Desktop flash will inevitably be phased out as well, but for now those plans are purely speculation.

Flash Forward

The future holds a great deal of HTML5 innovation as declared by Adobe in a recent post by Danny Winokur, Vice President & General Manager of Interactive Development at Adobe.

..HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively.  This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.

Meanwhile, Adobe expects to guide developers towards Adobe AIR for packaging of flash in apps.

Final Thoughts

We expect developers to jump ship from flash development as soon as possible. Many already have and Adobe’s halt in flash development is overdue. The end of development will serve to hasten the exodus of developers and move towards a more universal platform.
