Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Combat

Reckoning is an action RPG combining dynamic combat with RPG style story-telling. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the combat is fast and similar in style to ‘God of War’. Combos are going to be an endless source of entertainment as they provide unique sequences for each character type. The result is a variety of abilities used in conjunction with one another to deliver action packed events and fighting series.

Characters

As is typical with RPGs, there are three basic character styles, Reckoning defines them as pillars called Might, Finesse and Sorcery. Other aspects of RPG style gaming are present with the usual weapons, spells and their effects. Choosing a particular path will not exclude a character from learning abilities from other pillars. Each character will learn to hone their own unique abilities for completing quests and achieving wild combos. Additionally, players can benefit from altering their character’s path towards another pillar and in the process create a more prolific character.

Expectations

Reckoning at pre-release is a colorful, action RPG with creative combos, quick combat and visually appealing graphics. The story quality will be graded by the gamer audience and we’ll hold final judgement until we get hands on, but if it’s as deep and consuming as the visual aspects of the game, then 38 Studios will have a winner. After an extremely full 2011 holiday season, the extent of early high quality games in 2012 looked to be slim. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning may be the jumpstart 2012 needs and provide some RPG variety for those gamers feeling burnt out from Skyrim.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is available for PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 7, 2012.
