So you want to join the Dark Brotherhood huh? Along with the Companions and Thieves Guild storylines, the Dark Brotherhood makes for some great fun – on the evil side that is!
The Dark Brotherhood is a group of assassins whose purpose is to, well, assassinate others. Joining doesn’t come quick, and unlike some other quests, a little patience and attention is needed to start down the evil path.
Joining The Dark Brotherhood
Catch Wind of Aventus’ Plan
First thing you need to do is start talking to as many innkeepers and guards as possible. They may mention something about Aventus Aretino, a young boy who is intent on having Grelod the Kind killed. Aventus is part of the Innocence Lost quest which is vital to becoming part of the Dark Brotherhood.
There are many ways to activate Aventus chatter. Some of the best ways are to talk with folks in Windhelm, or head over to Riften and talk to the children in the orphanage, Maul and others around town. The children love to talk about Aventus and should get you going.
Complete Innocence Lost Quest
Aventus Aretino lives in Windhelm and that’s where your quest begins. Speak with the boy and take on the mission of killing Grelod the Kind. The quest is simple enough and is the jumping point for joining the Dark Brotherhood.
Join The Dark Brotherhood
After Innocence Lost is complete you’ll need to have some patience. After a day, be on the lookout for a Courier who’ll eventually catch up to you with a message. The message will simply read, “We know” with a black hand print on the parchment.
Anytime after that, simply sleep. You’ll awaken to find you’ve been abducted by the Dark Brotherhood. From there the path is up to you. Enjoy your time as a deadly assassin or eliminate your abductor!
