Have you had the urge to learn how to code? Maybe it’s something you’ve wanted to try, but put it off because it seemed difficult. You’re not alone. As the web keeps growing so do security concerns and the need for coders to build stable platforms and mobile apps.

Codecademy is a self-serve dead simple way to learn coding basics and beyond. Would be coders start off by entering some basic text in a javascript webapp. Codecademy guides users through the process by specifically instructing users on what to type and how to type it. The resulting output is displayed along with expanded instructions for the next step. Along the way users learn arguments and proper syntax which, through repetition, help users retain the information and build their overall knowledge base.

Teaching is done through sections that guide students through variables, arrays, if statements and others. Codecademy uses exercises, projects and challenges to test users skill level and since do-overs are encouraged, there’s no such thing as pass or fail. Additional features like a built-in scratch pad and course skipping give it a feel of made-to-order for the level of student.

The idea of coding may not seem fun, but Codecademy does its best to create a pleasant experience. Each student receives an overall score and achievements for completing sections and courses. For those who create an account, there are interactive options for learning with friends and tracking progress.

Codecademy is not so much a hidden gem, but more of a ‘wow’ website for those who thought coding was for academic bookworms. Learning to code by actually coding is an approach to be applauded and Codecademy does it perfectly.
