Playstation Network Re-branded As Sony Entertainment Network

Home / Blog / Gaming / Playstation Network Re-branded As Sony Entertainment Network

Sony has decided to do away with the Playstation Network (PSN) name and re-brand it under the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) umbrella. The change takes effect on February 8, 2012 according to playstation.com, although an email designates February 7th as the date. The entire Terms of Service and Privacy Policy updates can be found in the Sony release.

The change means very little for customers. Usernames, passwords and existing data will not change. Users will be given an agreement option when signing in to SEN for the first time. Sony has highlighted some changes which include:

  • New terms for parents of minor, subaccount holders regarding the limitations of chat parental controls. Your reacceptance of the Terms of Service and User Agreement and Privacy Policy affirms your consent to the sharing of your child’s data that may occur if your child utilizes certain communication functionalities on PlayStation devices such as PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems.
  • New terms that explain the location-based services offered through the PlayStation Vita system. For parents of minor, subaccount holders your reacceptance of the Terms of Service and User Agreement and Privacy Policy affirms your consent to your subaccount holder’s user of these services on the PlayStation Vita system.
  • A description of our “What’s New” section, which provides topical information about our services and advertisements.
  • Information about pre-ordering content.
  • The name of your “PlayStation Network account” is changing to a “Sony Entertainment Network account.”

Sony’s explanation for the change is summarized as enhancement to align with company goals. Goals which include bringing more media and content through Sony powered devices.

Sony’s taken some heat over the past year for its lack of security and information breaches. Removing the PSN name will in the short term mean little in the way of forgetting the missteps, but given time Sony can leave those errors behind with a strong showing under SEN.
