Just over two months ago, HP announced their PC division would be sold or spun off in favor of cloud based and software service technologies. Now, in rather anti-climatic fashion, they’ve decided against that decision and keep their PC division intact.
HP’s About Face
HP’s about face comes as little surprise, what with the removal of CEO Leo Apotheker in favor of Meg Whitman and the overall implosion of their PC business. HP’s decision should calm investors and wash away any immediate doubt about the company and their strategies.
HP is ready to hold onto the PC division and enjoy their perch at the top in the present, but the future for their PC business is likely to be much different. PC sales across the board are down and the explosion of tablets and wide adoption of smartphones has severely hampered the PC from maintaining its presence as the sought after technological device.
We predict over the next 12-18 months there we be significantly better guidance on where the PC market as a whole goes and how manufacturers will proceed. The climate at that time, along with what should prove to be additional leaps forward in technology will more clearly define PC roles in a home user environment. Business environments are unlikely to divert from the traditional PC office setup, in the near term, unless the financial benefit is overwhelming.
