G4TV

For those not familiar with G4TV, they are a television channel with programming based around tech gadgets, the web and video games. For more detailed information, you can search your local cable provider for G4 channel listings. Keep in mind the G4TV app requires absolutely zero knowledge of the TV channel to be useful.

G4TV is a highly graphical app that uses images and videos to enhance and illustrate topics such as video games and tech gadgets. The app supplies reviews from the G4 staff on products and video games, including the popular X-Play 5 star gaming reviews. In addition to reviews, the app provides News, Videos, Cheats and in game images from their extensive library of video games making G4TV’s app the best source for gaming information in a mobile platform.

For those who prefer all things tech, not related to video games, there’s plenty of that too. Attack Of The Show (AOTS) is G4TV’s all-in-one tech show. The G4TV app brings you all the latest from AOTS, including hilarious videos from around the net, tech news from the daily feed, product reviews, interviews, expo coverage and more.

The G4TV app covers a vast array of tech topics and while we’ve mentioned many of them, there are many more available. Although the app is heavy in terms of content, it’s relatively lite and quick which is somewhat rare with feature rich apps. You could spend quite a bit of time inside the app and as a result drain your battery quickly, which is typical of video integrated apps. There were times during E3 when we experienced infrequent, sudden app exits, but aside from special circumstances like that the app was completely stable and we’re willing to forgive hiccups like those in exchange for the live streaming coverage. If you’re looking to stay in the know on tech and video games or just want a quality tech related app, then the G4TV app will fit the bill. G4TV is a free Android and iOS app.

3D Bio Ball HD

Need another game to pass the time? 3D Bio Ball HD could be the answer. The object of the game is to roll your ball through a series of courses with obstacles and pitfalls placed throughout the game. You manipulate the orientation and movement of the ball by tilting the phone. As the phone tilts to the left, the ball rolls to the left, etc. The levels get more challenging as the game progresses with added pitfalls and barriers placed to prevent completion.

3D Bio Ball HD is great for killing some time or ideal for a quick distraction. The only nagging flaw with the app itself is its lack of an exit option. Beyond that, we had an occasional issue with the app exiting on its own after extended periods of gameplay. 3D Bio Ball HD is a free Android and iOS app.

Marvel

Many of us have come to love the Marvel characters, ranging from Wolverine and Cyclops to Iron Man and Captain America. The Marvel app brings those characters and many more to your mobile device. The app is basically a listing of comics. There is a Marvel Store which has comics sorted by series, creator, most popular, free and Arcs. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, Marvel provides a search feature for the store.

Beyond the store are a number of free comics which can be downloaded directly to your mobile device. While not extensive, there can be close to 20 free comics at any given time. You’ll need a Marvel account to make purchases or download content and the app organizes your comics in a separate tab for easy access. We experienced no stability issues with the Marvel app, it was quick responsive and easy on the battery. Marvel is a free Android and iOS app.

Final Thoughts

Keep in mind although we test the apps, some react differently given the wide range of phones. Always read reviews to help with decision making and make sure you read the app descriptions and info for additional details regarding functionality.

This month’s special App Roundup: Holiday Edition 2011 focuses on retail and travel apps. Normally we give apps a stability ranking, but for this special edition we’re not ranking and instead focusing on usefulnesss. We’re also releasing it in time for our readers to download and test the apps in plenty of time for the holidays, but be sure to check in at the end of the month for our normal App Roundup!

TripAdvisor

If you’re expecting to travel this holiday season, then you’re not alone. AAA expects over 42 million Americans to travel for the holidays this year. TripAdvisor is an all-in-one trip planner for finding hotels, restaurants and attractions. With TripAdvisor you can find cheap flights, check reviews, view photos and take virtual tours at street view level of destinations. As an added benefit for weary road warriors there is a ‘Near Me Now’ tool to find options near your current location. Save destinations and attractions to find them easily in the future. TripAdvisor is a free Android and iOS app.

Newegg

We’ve recommended the Newegg app before, but think a reminder is in order as we head into the holiday rush. If you plan to shop for electronics, computer goods or household items, then you need to have the Newegg app. The built-in UPC scanner is a feature that should not be ignored as it will allow shoppers to scan an in store special and compare it to the price on Newegg. Double checking those prices will guarantee you are getting the best price. Newegg is well known for selling quality products at an excellent price so wise shoppers should take advantage of the comparison shopping built right into the mobile app. Newegg is a free Android and iOS app.

TapBuy

TapBuy pronounces that it’s “..the fastest and most convenient way to save money shopping online..”. TapBuy shows online sales from many major retailers, including Gap, Newegg and others. TapBuy has unadvertised deals and finds coupons to save you money on your orders. Like others, TapBuy gathers deals from Groupon, LivingSocial and others. Additional features TapBuy provides are personalization, to view only what interests you, and simple ordering without ever leaving the app. The real bonus of using TapBuy is the time saved when ordering. By saving your data within the app itself, TapBuy completes the purchase in literally seconds and with only a few taps. TapBuy will save you time and money and is a must have shopping app. TapBuy is a free iOS app.

Yipit

Yipit gathers deals, sales and coupons from a variety of sources to provide you with the best price possible. Smart shoppers love to get deals and Yipit is the latest way to help you shop like a genius. Local shopping is something that is not only convenient, but great for your local economy. Yipit lets you search for deals near you, get recommendations, search by category, save deals and get information about deals before they sell out. Yipit collects deals from various sources including Groupon, LivingSocial and hundreds more. Yipit is a free iOS app.

CardStar

Do you have reward cards from various retailers or merchants? Fumbling through your purse or wallet to find the right reward points card can be a real hassle. CardStar digitally stores and organizes your membership cards, rewards cards and loyalty cards. Simply use your phone’s camera to scan in your cards, then access them when you are at the merchant with a single click on your phone. CardStar helps eliminate clutter and makes sure you never lose a rewards card again. CardStar is a free Android and iOS app.

Etsy

Etsy is an app designed to buy and sell handmade or vintage goods. Small businesses can sell their fashioned items through listings and manage their products through merchant tools. Buyers can browse through Treasury Lists, Art, Jewelry, Housewares and other categorized items and purchase directly from the mobile app. Etsy is a place to find unique gifts for yourself and others which is a welcome change from the typical big box, cookie cutter mentality from other mobile apps and retailers. Etsy is a free iOS app.

The Apps

1. Pixlr-o-matic

Pixlr-o-matic is a photograph effects editor app.  We recommended Pixlr-o-matic a short time ago and still consider it one of the simplest, easy to use photo editing apps on the market.  The app uses new or existing photos, can apply dozens of effects and frames and saves the altered photos as new images while keeping the originals intact.  Pixlr-o-matic is a free Android and iOS app.

2. Drag Racing

Anyone who enjoys a good racing game or custom building cars will enjoy this app.  Drag Racing is just as it’s name declares, a drag race between you and online or offline opponents.  The game offers ¼ and ½ mile races and multiple levels of difficulty.  Each level has more advanced vehicles and each has the ability to be modified with advanced parts or special tuning.

The races are short which makes this game a great distraction and online racing with bragging rights, called reputation points, makes the game a lot of fun.  Drag Racing is a free Android and iOS app.

3. ESPN Scorecenter

ESPN has long been the leader in sports news and information, but how is the app?  It’s a quality app that has ‘The Lead’ and separate screens for each sport which are focused towards your favorite teams.  Scorecenter also has a real time ticker which surprisingly doesn’t slow down the app.  Overall, ESPN has done a decent job at relaying sporting news through their Scorecenter app.  ESPN Scorecenter is a free Android and iOS app.

4. Hotmail

Microsoft continues to support Hotmail in the face of nearly unrivaled competition from Gmail and we’re glad they do.  Alternatives are always a good thing and Hotmail is a mainstay among many.  The Hotmail app is more than sufficient and does exactly what you’d expect an email app to do.  There aren’t a lot of surprises to speak of, but we were pleased to see support for multiple accounts.

The Hotmail app does have one nagging flaw.  Old mail seems to be irretrievable through the app.  That’s not to say the mail is lost, it just doesn’t appear in the app.  Aside from that we don’t really have any complaints.  The official Microsoft Hotmail is a free app for Android.
