Memrise
If you could learn a new language without taking long courses or skimming through translation books to find phrases, would you? It’s fair to say that most of us would like to learn a new language and with Memrise we can.
Memrise is an online education site that uses tutoring skills to enhance learning of languages and other subjects. Their team is comprised of experts on the subjects of memory and the human brain so they have a clear understanding of what it takes to not only learn something new, but retain it as well. Many times the brain is compared to a computer hard drive, a storage device for information. In comparison, Memrise views memory as a garden where the learning system endeavors to grow memories as opposed to simply storing them.
As described on their website:
“We think memory is more like a garden than a storehouse. So we visualize each word you learn as a seed, growing into a plant; we represent your mind as a colourful garden, and your knowledge is then something you’ll want to tend and cultivate, to lovingly keep alive, not let wither as soon as you’ve passed an exam.”
Memrise’s primary focus is on language learning with more than 100 different options although several other subjects are available including math, memory training, stars (Astronomy) and several others. The learning system starts by using images to help the brain learn while having a bit of fun in the process. Memory needs tending, like a garden, in order to grow and Memrise works on that premise. Along the way, users can expect a clean interface with little distraction from the item at hand.
During my initial testing I found myself eager to continue, regardless of subject and the stages seemed to pass by quickly. Admittedly, I find my own memory to be a bit perplexing at times, remembering multiple 20+ character passwords seems relatively simple while learning a language in the past has been a challenge. Memrise seems to have the right idea and is a worthwhile site if you intend to increase your memory power.
