How great would it be to highlight to the world what a wonderful city you live in? Through the power of the web that is very much possible, but there lacks a fun interactive way of doing so. Until now that is. Urbantag is a site dedicated to showcasing your world around you.
Urbantag is similar to a pinboard, whereby users pin locations to a map to show they’ve either been there or would like to visit that location. Pins can have photos, information, comments and recommendations associated with them which adds a nice social feel to the environment.
Through pins – cities, restaurants, attractions, landmarks, parks, businesses and other places can have an additional virtual storefront that highlights addresses, location type and description. Through these Urbantags, users can share their favorite spots and spread the word about places in their city.
The layout is comfortable with complimentary colors and very little distraction. It’s a simple interface with what appears to be, ease of use in mind. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles with regards to sharing and support, yet they do exist in minimal form.
Location pages portray columns with photos, comments and likes as well as a maps column that lists all the Urbantag maps that a location is pinned to.
If you’re looking for a feature rich pin mapping site, then Urbantag isn’t for you. It has a great deal of potential for moving beyond the simple “pin a place and add some detail” type system, but as of now doesn’t have those extras in place.
One benefit of Urbantag that doesn’t appear to be mentioned on the site is the impact of sharing local destinations. Those who believe in keeping it local can really build their community’s reputation by sharing local restaurants and businesses which in turn helps promote a local economy. As a result, an entire community can benefit from Urbantag sharing.
Urbantag is available for iOS devices, but currently doesn’t have an Android option.
Urbantag is great to look at which puts it in position to build without worry of aesthetics. It’s simplicity is charming, though we’d like to see some more features. Perhaps partnering with a travel website could create an interactive vacation planning option for users looking to visit a location they discover on Urbantag.
Despite it’s lack of features, Urbantag is a website that offers appeal and purpose without selling or hidden paywalls. Give Urbantag a try and see for yourself.
