Have you ever highlighted a book or other reading material? Most of us have whether it’s for school, work or to quickly recount information. That process is very effective when separating relevant information from extraneous content. Diigo, pronounced D-Go, takes that process of highlighting and marking information and applies it to the web. Diigo is an online bookmarking site with advanced highlighting and note-taking features. The service is comparable to Delicious, but with advantages that make it stand out.

Diigo’s basic functionality involves bookmarking. Websites can be bookmarked to Diigo just as simply as they can to other online services or browsers. Bookmarks can be imported from browsers and Diigo provides an instructional video for transitioning from Delicious. Diigo uses groups and lists along with traditional tags to organize and sort bookmarks. Items can be marked as public or private with an option to mark them as unread for later reading.

The uniqueness of Diigo comes into play with its highlighting and note-taking features. There are times when online articles are lengthy. Perhaps the subject matter dictates the length or it could be that there are many steps which need outlined. With Diigo highlighting, users can use a virtual highlighter to mark areas within the article that are important or pertinent which allows for fast retrieval later on. Additionally, sticky notes can be affixed to sections of pages for added annotation. Public sticky notes are a great way to have discussion about articles and webpages. Users can interact between each other by way of the sticky note messages.

Diigo makes using their service very convenient by supplying toolbars, bookmarklets, extensions and apps so that every device on multiple platforms have Diigo access. Save a webpage on your PC, highlight its relevant content and access it from your iPad when you’re out and about. Social interaction plays a part in Diigo as well. Diigo has a built-in social platform designed to have followers for sharing favorites, exchanging notes, etc. Diigo also offers the option to bookmark your Twitter favorites which is something other services can’t do.

There are an abundance of features associated with Diigo that go beyond what’s been covered here. Features such as screenshot taking, annotation of screenshots, auto-post bookmarks to blogs and cross posting to Delicious. Premium features like full text searching and unlimited cached pages make Diigo much more than a simple bookmarking service. Diigo is a free service with some limitations to cached pages and highlighting per year. Their premium packages add unlimited options as well as priority support and ads free features. Users can sign-up using Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo!, OpenID or by creating a unique account.
