How To Upgrade Sandstone Villa

First things first. If you haven’t yet made your way to Adessa, do so now to make Sandstone Villa available. Initially, it’s more of a free rental than a house, nevertheless it does contain a stash right from the start. To take ownership, you’ll need to complete a quest titled, “New in Town”.  View our House Quests article for how to obtain other Reckoning houses.

New in Town Quest

• Start “New in Town” quest by speaking with Bruten at Sandstone Villa.
• Follow the quest-line by speaking with Templar Jorielle located in Domus Politica.
• Upon completion of the quest, you are awarded the title deed to Sandstone Villa. You may then proceed to upgrade the house.

Sandstone Villa (Upgrades)

• Speak with Suner Pome, located in Grand Bursar’s about upgrades. He’s also the banker from which you can take out loans and invest gold.
• Upgrade twice to get both Alchemy Workbench and Blacksmithing Forge.

Other Notes

This house is a bit buggy. You’ll notice that there are still henchmen inside the house when you arrive after the upgrades. PC users have reported crashes after the upgrade which are fixed by disabling the widescreen fixer.

Miners in the Sand

This quest activates after the Bloodbane quest is complete. Bloodbane can be started by speaking with Capstan Odvar inside the Motus Mining Outpost.

• Speak with Apule Vire to start the Miners in the Sand quest. He is outside of the Motus Mining Outpost.
• Find and speak with Calovar. He is located southwest of Apule Vire across the bridge and up the hill to the right.
• Go to Aron Excavations Mine.
• Find Edgar Aron inside the mine and retrieve Calovar’s Relic. Note: Persuasion worked very well on Aron.
• Find the 5 lost miners in the desert and release their minds (just talk to them). Miners are located on your map.
• Return to Apule Vire to complete the Miners in the Sand quest.

Rewards

• Gold
• Mine and group of miners who earn you gold while you’re out adventuring. Mine can be expanded to maximize profits.
• Aron Excavations Office (house) with upgrades available (Sagecraft Altar and Blacksmithing Forge).

Final Notes

This house is nearly perfect. Easy access (compared to Sagemaster’s Quarters in Rathir), Sagecraft Altar and Blacksmithing Forge through upgrades, continuous gold earning through mining labor and the quest is relatively simple to complete. The only thing missing is an Alchemy table.

This quest-line is long, but if those who follow the path of magic will likely be interested in pursuing it. The house is decked out with sagecraft, alchemy and blacksmithing tables along with the usual stash.

House of Valor (DLC)

The House of Valor quest is downloadable content and worth the effort since the rewards involve lots of coin and experience. There aren’t many special features to speak about, but there is a secret room in the house which could provide useful equipment.

Aron Excavations Office (Hollowlands House)

A rather short, simple quest-line with more than substantial rewards.  The Hollowlands are located in Detyre and this is one of 3 possible houses available in this area.

Sandstone Villa (Adessa House)

This is the simplest house to achieve. All you need to do is make it to Adessa and you will be given the house for free without any tasks required. The house is extremely large and is better described as a building. A nice feature of this house is that it comes with a healer inside. While this is the easiest house to get, you’ll need to survive the travel on your way to Adessa. With some proficient dodging and “running away” skills, there shouldn’t be a problem reaching it.

• Travel to Tulan.
• Find and receive information from Lerkara Fel.
• Kill Patrick Morkan.
• Meet Lerkara Fel at The Raven in Mel Aglir.

Shardfall

• Travel to Rathir.
• Meet with Savant Aethan Engar in the Upper City at Scholia Arcana inside the Main Hall to start Shardfall quest.
• Travel to Emaire and speak with Anker Edmure.
• Hunt and kill Paragon Barghest, retrieve the heart and return it to Edmure. Note: The Paragon Barghest is located just west of Mull Rane which is in the far north of the Plains of Erathell.
• Travel to Shardfall Caves.
• Defeat Cadoc Reen and retrieve the Frost Stone.
• Travel to Scholia Arcana in Rathir and speak with Eran Metheen to start Lightning in a Bottle quest.

Lightning in a Bottle

[list type=bullet]

• Travel to Skycrown and meet with Savant Aethan Engar.
• Find Savant Aethan Engar’s body. Note: It will move once.
• Kill Savant Aethan Engar and retrieve the Storm Stone and Sun Stone.
• Return to Scholia Arcana in Rathir and speak with Eran Methneen.

A Crowded Mind

• Find Archsage Caledus in Archsage Quarters. Check map for location.
• When you find Archsage Caledus, you must place your palm on the glyph to be transported to the Dreamworld.
• Defeat all enemies in the Dreamworld and return to Archsage Caledus.

When you return to Archsage Caledus you will be given a reward, but you must choose the reward. He offers a choice of Fearlessness or Discipline. The reward is a new Twist of Fate Card and they are essentially polar opposites of one another.

Fearlessness:

• +5% Elemental Damage
• +1 to Sorcery Abilities

Discipline:

• +5% Elemental Resistance
• +1 to Sorcery Abilities

Revelation

• Meet Archsage Jubal Caledus at the Scholia Arcana Chapterhouse Grounds to begin the Revelation quest.
• Place the Frost, Storm and Sun stones in the statues. The statues are located the the right, left and behind Archsage Caledus’ position.
• Kill Ciara Sydanus.

Rewards

That completes the Rathis house quest-line. Upon Ciara Sydanus’ demise you will be approached by Savant Eran Methneen and rewarded the Archsage’s Ring, Key to the Quarters and the title of Archsage. The ring has +15% resistance to Fire, Ice and Lightning along with +30 mana and -10% mana cost.

Backpacks each add an additional 10 storage slots to your character’s inventory and are sold in various shops across Amalur. Unfortunately, those shops or sellers are extremely specific and they only sell one backpack. It makes backpacks harder to find and requires chatting with many NPCs to find those who sell them.

Getting Started

If you haven’t already downloaded the content, then do so. The special redeem code and instructions are outlined in the leaflet that accompanied your retail game. Once you’ve successfully activated your online pass, you’re ready to begin.

Make sure everything was done properly with the House of Valor content download by checking your map. Pull up your map, scroll to the right and look for ‘House of Valor’ in Detyre. That’s your destination.

House of Valor Faction Quest

• Speak with Jakin Madsen. Note: You may need to rescue him from two brutes.
  
  
• Start quest ‘Earning Valor‘. The quest involves defeating Might, Sorcery and Finesse groups in the Arena Pit. Defeat all three to continue with the questline.
• Speak with Jakin Madsen to start ‘A Valorous Proposition‘.
• Speak with Tyr Magnus (House of Valor Champion) in the Champion’s Manor.
• Speak with Jakin Madsen to begin the Arena Pit battle and defeat Mad Dog.
• Speak with Jakin Madsen to start ‘A Viper For All Seasons‘.
• Speak with Jakin Madsen to start ‘Meeting With Magnus‘.
• Meet with one of Magnus’ henchmen behind the stairs. There’s no right or wrong way to approach this. For instance, my first run through I tried to persuade with a 5% chance and succeeded.
• Speak with Jakin Madsen to start ‘Championship Match‘. You’ll be fighting Magnus and his chief henchmen. If you want to know about them before defeating them, you can climb atop the arena stairs where they’re all gathered in one area to the far left.

Rewards: Key to Champion’s Manor, which is now a house for you. A new Twist of Fate card, Undisputed Champion and a greatsword.

The questline is fairly straight forward, the running theme is to keep talking to Jakin Madsen and fighting in the pit. Along the way, you’ll run into a character called Jokull. He rewards you with a new piece of equipment after each arena battle. The gear is decent and mostly geared towards those following the Might path.

Tips

[list type=bullet]

• I found the sorceress to be the most potent ally in the arena, although none of them are much help.
• Focus on the leader in each battle. Once he falls, the rest are like fodder.
• Dodging is your best defense. Roll out of the way and attack. Repeat.
• In the ‘Championship Match’, focus on the henchmen before Tyr. It’s harder to get to him otherwise. The archer goes down quick, the sorcerer is the most elusive and the fighter is easy once the sorcerer is gone.

Final Notes

The House of Valor questline is uncomplicated, but you’ll need to be prepared. If you run it straight through you can probably complete it in about 30 minutes or so. The rewards are good and the Arena Board offers some additional challenges for making money.

In this tip we explain how to successfully dispel chests with some simple tricks to become more adept at it. Dispelling is not a simple task so don’t be alarmed because you’ve failed repeatedly.

Dispel Information

There are a few things that you’ll need to know before you get started.

Glyphs

1. There are 4 symbols to be aware of when dispelling chests. Glyphs represent the suggested order for dispelling.
2. Each glyph has a number of marks from 1-3.
   
3. Each glyph has its own time limit, dependent upon the marks, before it reactivates. The lower the number, the longer it remains inactive.
4. Each glyph has its own time limit, dependent upon the order in which is was deactivated. So if there are 2 single marked glyphs, then the one pressed deactivated first will reactivate first when the time is up.
   
5. On more difficult chests a red glyph may appear which, if tapped, will automatically cause an explosion.

Example: Award has 5 glyphs. There are 2 single mark glyphs, 1 double marked glyph, 1 triple marked glyph and 1 red glyph.

A successful dispel will come from avoiding the red glyph while deactivating (tapping) the single marked glyphs first, then the double marked glyph and finally the third marked glyph all before the first single marked glyph’s deactivation time expires and prior to the end of the allowed time for total chest dispelling expires.

Deactivating Glyphs

• There is a white circle which moves along the glyph ring. The white ring is how you choose when to deactivate a glyph.
• As the circle moves along the ring, deactivate (tap) the smaller number marked glyphs first and so on.
• Speed is essential. Be mindful of the time remaining on the dispel attempt as well as each glyph.

Tips

• The white circle doesn’t have to be entirely over the glyph. Deactivate the glyph when the white circle hits the outer part of the glyph ring.
• Practice is key so make sure you make a serious attempt every time to improve your timing.
• Learn dispelling. You don’t need to learn it to maximum, just put a few points into it to make things a bit easier.
• Let it explode. These things are incredibly aggravating. If you save with full health before dispelling one and have a health regen item, then just walk up to it and try to auto-dispel it. Most times it will fail, but the explosion can usually be absorbed and if you have a health regen item, then there is zero risk. Granted this isn’t the most enticing solution, but it works.

It would be almost unfair to compare the two, Skyrim has been named game of the year by many gaming experts and communities while Reckoning stumbled out the gates with a buggy demo. However, after a considerable amount of hours dedicated to each, there are differences that make Reckoning stand out.

Combat

Battles are quick and fluid. Movement is intuitive and switching between multiple weapons is instantaneous. Reckoning allows for primary and secondary weapons so no need to constantly pause and change weaponry during a fight. Reckoning stands apart with the use of Fateshift. Characters have a Fate meter that, when used, grants a bonus during battle. The advantage is sizable with a special potent move at the end of each fateshift.

Chakrams and Archery

Reckoning’s secondary weapons feature delivers more options than ever for characters. Chakrams are a unique weapon which add some excitement to battle scenes. Chakrams are typically infused with magical effects, whether it be for damage infliction or bonus to character. They deal damage similar to daggers and are quicker than larger weapons. Overall, they’re a nice change from the typical sword, hammer, dagger or staff weaponry.

Some players don’t want to move cautiously or carefully target enemies with a bow and arrow, yet still want some sort of ranged weaponry option. Reckoning archers have the benefit of auto-aim, so there’s no mistaking where the arrow will fly. No more missed headshots because an arrow soared high. Additionally, archers have the advantage of rapid fire in Reckoning. Just tap, tap, tap until you run out of arrows. Archery is fast, auto-targeted and fluid.

Load Times

If you played Skyrim at all, you know that load times are a drag. Just running across a field can cause a sudden pause in play so that the game can buffer back up to speed. Those load times don’t exist in Reckoning. Sure, there are load times, but nothing close to the level of stoppage in Skyrim.

Small Bonus Reason

Another small reason is for those who have sight trouble. Skyrim can get very dark, even with brightness settings adjusted. Reckoning has such a colorful, bright world, that even at night it’s almost impossible to not see the environment around your character. If you’re not a fan of darkness in games, then Reckoning is a nice option.

How To Join The Travelers

Move towards the The Sidhe and guide your character towards the western forest edge. Along the way you’ll encounter a man by the name of Grim Onwig who, after a short conversation, points you towards Star Camp with directions to speak with Crilgarin.

The Guided Hands Quest

• Speak with Crilgarin.
• Go to Hierophant Shrine and pray. You will be given 3 tasks to perform. View your map to see the locations.

Steal Ealfwig Grilricas’ Medallion

[list type=”play”]

• Go to Didenhil Inn Three Lamps Inn in Didenhil. There are two ways to complete this part of the quest.
• At night: Enter stealth mode and sneak up to Ealfwig while he’s sleeping and pickpocket the medallion from him.
• During the day: Talk to him, then wait for him to turn around or somehow get behind him. Enter stealth mode and wait for him to lose sight of you (when the eyes fade away). Pickpocket the medallion.

Claim (steal) the pall of the dead St. Eadric’s

[list type=”play”]

• You’ll need to loot St. Eadric’s Tomb which is a large sarcophagus in the back of the Chapel.
• Enter stealth mode and wait for the NPCs to lose sight of you.
• Loot the sarcophagus.

Steal Draug’s Toothpicks from Gunnar Frode

[list type=”play”]

• Head to Vorm Lodge.
• Enter stealth mode and pickpocket Gunnar Frode. Steal Gunnar Frode’s Key.
• Head upstairs in Vorm Lodge and loot Gunnar Frode’s map from Gunnar’s Footlocker.
• The map will direct you to a Pile of Rocks, take Draug’s Toothpicks from the Pile of Rocks.

When you’ve completed all three tasks, return to Crilgarin with the items. Good luck!

5 Tips To Improve Your KoA: Reckoning Experience

Train Skills to Suit your Character

There are a lot of skills available for whichever style of play you wish to pursue. So many in fact that it can get a little overwhelming when deciding what to learn and to what extent. Make things easy on yourself by training the skills which best suit your character. If you’ve chosen finesse and are on the path to becoming a rogue, then train the stealth and ranged skills. You’ll have time later to add certain perks to your character from the other classes, but focusing on pertinent skills now will make your character stronger and more effective.

Use Weapons that Fit Your Style of Play

Who doesn’t love a sword bigger than an entire body, right? Maybe. Regardless, if you’re on the path of might, then you’ll want to carry longswords, hammers and the like. You wouldn’t expect a warrior, armored to the teeth, to be swinging around a dagger or casting spells so don’t make your character either. Stick with weapons that fit your character build to gain expertise. By doing so, your character becomes a more powerful, precise fighter.

Block, Dodge, Move and Get Out of the Way

Fighting can be all hack-n-slash if you so desire, but there are going to be times when the enemy is too tough to stand in front of it and tank all that damage. Learn to get out of the way and move your character around during battle. Combat is not fixed, nor is there a delay in motion so start using dodge right now. Block is another great way to lessen the damage your character will take. Shields are plentiful so its best to acquire one and make use of it. If you want to be a fluid, graceful fighter who leaves others in awe, then get moving during battle.

Train Alchemy

This is one skillset that every character needs to know. Potions aren’t cheap and don’t grow on trees, but with some basic alchemy characters can use knowledge to create concoctions from the harvests they’ve acquired. The benefits are endless and requires little effort.

Get a House

We’ve already covered ‘How To Get A House‘ in another article, but the point needs to be made for acquiring one. Storage is tight and always is in games where gear is a feature. In order to save all the items you obtain, you’ll need a place to stash them. That’s where a house comes in. There’s a quest early on in Reckoning which will allow you to procure a house and start hoarding.

Bonus Tip

Invest in archery as a secondary fighting option. Archery gear advances as the game progresses which means more powerful arrows and bows will present themselves. In Reckoning, archers auto-aim at targets so there isn’t much thought or skill needed to use a bow. As a secondary weapon, a character can shoot off a great number of arrows before having to engage an enemy in close quarters which gives you the advantage. The damage an enemy takes will be less than running them through with a sword, but will wear them down a bit before you close in for the kill.
